We helped to pass a Study Action Item on Economic Globalization at the Unitarian General Assembly in 2001 ( http://www.uua.org/csw/saiguide0103.htm ) and along with supporting this effort in the local community we worked with the National UUA’s Faith in Action to create the Resource Guide that has gone out to UU churches in support of the globalization Study Action Item. The conclusion to this Study Action Item process is the creation of a Statement of Conscience(SOC) that is voted on for adoption as “official” UUA policy at the General Assembly this summer. EJAG members have submitted comments on the proposed SOC and plan to attend GA in June 2003 to help pass this important statement. An 18-page booklet titled “WTO vs. American Democracy: Is Trade the Only Thing That Counts” (June 2000) was written by Margaret Gribskov and designed and produced by Josie Koehne, EJAG members. We published and distributed 1500 copies of the original, and an electronic version is available to download from the following link. (It may take a while to download and Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or newer is required to view this ‘read only’ version.)

EJAG members wrote Senate Joint Memorial 2 that was passed by both houses of the Oregon Legislature in May 2001 and sent on to the US Congress. SJM2 expressed the Oregon Legislature’s concern over the impacts of international trade agreements on the sovereignty of local and state government and urged the US Congress to hold hearings around the country and to study the issue. In addition to writing SJM2, EJAG members worked actively in coalition with Local To Global and the Tractor Coalition (farmers) to educate and lobby members of the Oregon Legislature on the importance of this issue.

Barbara Dudley’s gave the keynote address entitled: “the Family Farm in an Era of Globalization” at a Food Forum held at the church in 2001 and a video is available for sale at the social justice table between Sunday services, or by contacting Kate Lore.
